Describe a trip you made for the school magazine

Two good examples here; one from Sulani about a trip to a museum and one from PaoPao about an activity holiday in the Himalayas.

A Museum Trip

Lots of tourists are visiting our town each year, but have you ever thought of taking part in some of the tourist activities yourself? That’s just what we, year 11, did last week. We took a tourist bus through the center of town and saw all kinds of places. I took photographs of the cathedral and one of the old monuments in the main square.

After we had eaten our packed lunch in astley gardens, we visited the castle museum. We were taken around by a friendly guide who advised us not to try to touch anything but to concentrate on just a few things. He also explained to us that many museums now use modern technology to make the exhibits more interesting. For example, he showed us how to use computers to investigate ideas of what the town looked like in different historical periods.

After our guided tour, Mr Banes let us choose any object in the museum and sketch it. I choose a strikingly beautiful carved door which had caught my attention earlier. After we had finished sketching we went outside again and we climbed the 100 steps to the top of the lookout tower. From such a high point, we had fantastic views over the surrounding area. This was the most memorable part of the trip for me.

If you want to see our town through new eyes, why not take a tourist bus or visit the museum? You're going to be surprised at what you might discover!
(Sulani, Year 11 ESL)

An activity holiday in the Himalayas

Recently, I got a chance to go to the Himalayas in Nepal. It was the best trip in my life. Everything was amazing. I also learned many things from the the trip.

I arrived last Monday morning and it was freezing but in the afternoon it got warmer. I went to stay at a local person's house; the house and the local area was very unique because they wanted to conserve their old-styles houses. Also, everyone was so approachable, including my guide.

While staying in the Himalayas, I did so many activities. I got to do a major trek on the Himalayas and when I reached the tourist stop it was stunning; the scenery and the town were covered with snow and it was very pleasing to see that. Furthermore, my guide introduced me to many different museums and interesting places. My favourite place was the museum; there were a lot of ancient exhibits which told me about how they lived in the past.

Overall, the trip was marvelous. For people who like to learn about other cultures, I really recommend this trip because you’ll get to stay with the local people so you’ll see their real culture. Also, there are many must-see museums.

Letter - A trip to Cherokee

Some nice work done on this. Here a couple of great examples - Nokweed at core and PaoPao at extended.

Hi Marsha,

I’m sorry I didn’t write back to your email last week but I was so busy with my Cherokee trip last week. Therefore, I will tell you about my trip with Joon who works in the shop near my house.

I visited Qualla Boundary which is one of the Cherokee towns. There is also mountain scenery surrounding the town and that was a very nice place to visit. After that we went to the souvenir shop which I liked the most because they have a lot of history like a mini model of the town.

In conclusion, I really liked this trip because of the exotic environment and a lot of history. I will write to you soon about my next trip to Japan.

Love,

Nokweed

************************************************************

Hi Yim,

Recently, I just had a holiday for one week and it was fabulous. I had a chance to go to Cherokee with my friends. Actually, I planned to visit my uncle in China but then my friend introduced me to Cherokee. By looking at the the pictures I knew that it was going to be amazing so I changed my mind.

There were lots of places to visit. For example, the Oconaluftee Indian Village has all the tribal crafts and it defines the lifestyle of the native-American 18th century. Furthermore, there was a historical pageant called Unto These Hills for me to watch. Moreover, on Friday afternoons huge crowds of people gather in a large bingo hall to play many kind of games. It was really fun.

Overall, it was the best trip of my life. Everyone in Cherokee was so amiable and I love how the village represented the 18th century very well. I wish you had been there with me too. See you soon.

Love,
Paopao

Holidaying at home or abroad

Which do you prefer? Here are a couple of great answers from Marsya and Mohammad

"Nowadays, travelling is easier than some years ago. Some people prefer to travel in their own country. Meanwhile, some people prefer to travel abroad. There are advantages to both.

First of all, a holiday in your country gives you the opportunity to know in depth about your country’s history and origins. Travelling in your own country is usually cheaper than going abroad. You can also bring a whole group of friends or family as it does not cost too much money. Finally, because you speak the local language, you will be less stressed and able to completely enjoy your vacation.

On the other hand, travelling abroad allows you to get to know traditions and customs different from yours. This may turn out to be a fascinating and captivating experience. Travelling abroad also allows us to practice other languages, which might be useful for education.

In conclusion, I think that people should travel abroad from time to time, but also visit their own country to appreciate the traditions and the customs." (Marsya, Year 10 ESL)

"Holidays are exceptionally fun, especially when you go outside the country with your friends and family. There are many ways to enjoy your stay in and out of your country. However, there are also disadvantages of staying or travelling.

Firstly, traveling within your country is cheaper and easier than going abroad. Furthermore, you don’t need to carry around unnecessary itsm such as your passport and heavy luggage. Also, traveling within your country helps develop your knowledge about your own culture and landmarks. In addition, you can take a large number of people to travel within your country with you because it costs less.

On the other hand, travelling abroad can cost a lot of money and can take a long time and could be a terrifying experience for some people if you go by a plane, boat or a train. Secondly, it would be difficult to travel to some countries as you will need a passport and might need a visa. You might also get lost in the country you travel to as you know nothing about it’s landmarks.

In conclusion, travelling abroad is more fun even though it cost more and takes more time and effort but sure it will be worth the experience." (Mohammad, Year 10 ESL)

Three groups - KFC, Kiskebab and Munky

Good work yesterday in the groups. KFC might have lost on the name, but made up with guessing the words! I'm also going to give some marks for group work. As KFC were very quite, they will get 3. Munky worked well together (Vamsi was a bit quiet) so I will give them 5. But all the Kiskebab members worked really well together so they get 10 points.

So the current scores are:

KFC (Adelia, Simon, Marsya / Dinara, Yim) - 18 points
Kiskebab (Sulani, Kew / Mohammed, Natalie) - 15 points
Munky (Paopao, Vamsi / Nokweed, Marina) - 14 points

So all to play for!

Summary - Cooking is fun - Feedback

The "cooking is fun" was generally well done but I noticed a few common mistakes.

1. Summary structure - one paragraph

2. Be careful with verbs endings -ed and -ing, for example: enjoy
"The children enjoyed cooking with their friends."
"The children are enjoying cooking with their friends."
Also adjectives ending in -ed and -ing, for example: boring and bored
"I am bored with doing homework." "Homework is boring for me."

3. Listing items, use for example and such as.
There are many good teams in England such as Liverpool, Man U and Chelsea.
There are many good teams in England, for example, Liverpool, Man U and Chelsea.

4. Using linking words such as however and in addition.
I like hot food; however, I prefer cold food.
I'm studying English and French. In addition, I'm studying Mandarin.

5. Gerunds - verb + ing
    Shopping is interesting for me.

6. lots of / few / many / much
I got lots of sweets. / There are very few expensive cars in Thailand.
There are many ugly boys in the class. / I love chocolate very much.

There were two very good summaries, one from Adelia and one from Mohammad. Click here to read them.

Letter of advice - Lonely friend

Paopao and Marina wrote great letters. Fantastic work (!!!). Please read them and comment below.

I will give some general feedback about all the letters in the next class.

Paopao's letter

Hi Yim,

It is a pleasure to hear from you and to know that you’ve moved into a new area. But I’m worried that you’re feeling lonely. I used to feel like that when I just moved into my dorm so I think i can use my experiences to give you some advice.

Firstly, you need to find something you would like to do as your hobby. For example, you could read books, watch movies or listen to music. If you’re still feeling lonely you could go to an arcade near your area. It’ll definitely help you with meeting new people or things that you’ve never seen in your area before. But I know that you don’t prefer doing things alone so the essential tip is to find some friends. They might be your classmates, roommates or anyone in your dorm. This advice that I have just suggested will surely heal your loneliness.

I hope my advice is useful for you. If you have any problems please write to let me know. Love you!

Best wishes,
Paopao

Marina's letter

Hi Kate,

How are you? I heard from your brother that you moved to another city and you feel lonely.

I think you should not be sad because in new places you can know something different. You can find new friends. I think you have already found some in school. However, if you still feel lonely you can go to the different school clubs or find some in your city like sports or music. I'm sure that you will find lots of friends there. Or maybe you should find a hobby for yourself.

Anyway , don't be shy to communicate with people. Just be yourself and be confident. Also don't forget friends from your last school. I heard that you miss them. I think you can talk on Skype with them or see each other on weekends.

I hope to see you soon. I'm sure that you will find a lot of friends. I waiting for your letter back.

Good luck,
Marina

Summary - Cooking is fun

Adelia and Mohammad wrote great summaries. Brilliant work (!!!). Please read them and comment below. [link to original article]

I will give some general feedback about all the summaries in the next class.

Adelia's summary

If they learn how to cook

If young children learn how to cook they will develop team skills and learn to appreciate each individual’s contribution. Also if children cook they will have a better diet and the benefit from that is good health for the rest of their lives. Maybe in the future the children will decide to follow a career related to cooking. This means that the industry will grow all over the world. It also shows that friendships are established between cooking for young children. When children who don’t like certain foods, begin cooking for themselves, they enjoy dishes that they would not previously have eaten.

Mohammad's Summary

Cooking is fun for young people

When children cook they try new ways and recipes of cooking nutritious food. They even could start adding vegetables in some of their meals which they need to get enough vitamins and minerals which can help with their growth and could prevent some diseases. It is believed that if children cook their own food they have a higher chance of finishing it all. in addition this skill will stay with them forever if they learn it when they are young and some of them might take it further and open a restaurant and make a living. It’s even a great way to get the family together and have fun.
