Summary - Reaching for the top - Oct/Nov 2008 Ext

Perhaps the biggest problem that mountaineers have when ascending Everest is the weather; the extreme cold and unpredictable weather patterns make climbing dangerous, and can lead to frostbite. In addition, clinging to the mountain above the steep precipices is nerve-wracking. Moreover, the low oxygen count due to the high altitude makes breathing laborious. Nevertheless, climbers are attracted to Everest because of the breathtaking views, the opportunity to stand on the top of the world, chances to meet fellow climbers and the love of the sport. Finally, there is the sheer exhilaration of the challenge of climbing Everest. These things make the dangers of climbing Everest worthwhile.
